QUESTIONS TO ASK YOUR LONG-TERM CARE INSURANCE AGENT
Whether you are considering a 1035 exchange or just looking into long-term care insurance, there are several important things to keep in mind.
First, unlike other insurance policies, which you can switch from year to year, generally you do not change your long-term care insurance.  With the exception of a 1035 exchange, it rarely pays.
Second, there can be a significant variation between one company’s plan and another (this is true for both traditional long-term care insurance as well as linked-benefit (LIFE+LTC) policies.  Costs can vary.  Acceptable health conditions can vary.  Future available benefit amounts can vary.
THAT’S WHY THE AMERICAN ASSOCIATION FOR LONG-TERM CARE INSURANCE RECOMMENDS YOU ASK THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS to the agent or broker you work with:
1.  Are you licensed to sell BOTH traditional long-term care insurance AND linked-benefit LTC (life or annuity + LTC) policies?
2.  How long have you been licensed to sell long-term care?
3.   How many different long-term care insurance companies are you “appointed” with?  (Appointed means the agent or broker can earn a commission when you buy that policy.  Agents can talk to you about policies even if they are NOT appointed to sell the policy … but they can only sell … and get paid if they are appointed to sell by that particular insurance company.
